Frigidaire refrigerator ice maker not making ice
Follow ice-maker, supply and cooling checks, with a verified FRFS2823AS manual boundary.
What this guide covers
Symptoms: Ice maker not making ice
This guide follows a structured decision tree built from manufacturer troubleshooting information. It does not assume that the most commonly replaced part is the failed part, and it does not show an exact-fit replacement part unless model compatibility has been independently verified.
Continue this exact diagnostic
Before you check anything
Stop for an active leak, smoke, sparking, electrical shock or damaged wiring. Do not move the refrigerator to reach hidden tubing, open electrical panels, force an ice cycle or bypass a safety device. A recall notice takes priority over this guide. The interactive diagnostic checks CPSC information when you provide a model; an unavailable check or no match does not establish that the appliance is safe.
Write down the full model from the rating label, when ice stopped, and any recent installation or filter work. Keep the serial number for the manufacturer or technician; do not put it in a public comment or URL.
Which instructions apply to your refrigerator?
The checks below are general Frigidaire guidance. The separately labeled details apply only to FRFS2823AS, using the external-dispenser ice maker shown in owner guide A20811503 (February 2022). They do not establish procedures for another model, an unverified revision or the optional second ice maker. Compare your label and controls with the manual before acting.

Safe troubleshooting sequence
What to look at, and what each observation tells you:
- Ice-making controlFind the ice-maker on/off setting in your own manual. Dispensing stored ice does not prove that new ice is being made. If you cannot identify the control, leave it alone and choose “Not sure” in the diagnostic.
- Installation and filter timingCheck the installation date or ask who last changed the filter. Recent work can require priming; an unknown date is not a reason to assume another day of waiting will fix the problem. New installation and a filter change are different situations.
- Water flow and filter historyIf your model has a water dispenser, observe its flow using a container. Note weak flow, when the filter was changed and whether it was seated using the correct manual. Look at tubing only if already visible. A compatible filter is not automatically due for replacement.
- Actual coolingRecord the freezer setting and, if available, a freezer-thermometer reading and its time. Follow the thermometer instructions. A displayed target is not a measurement. If food is thawing, address the cooling problem rather than waiting solely for ice.
FRFS2823AS: verified places to look
- Control — manual page 20Ice Maker is left on the external display, below Freeze Boost. Lit means on; unlit means off. Read it first without toggling it. The recommended freezer setting is 0°F.Page 20: controls and settings
- Priming — pages 26 and 40For installation, page 26 describes about four minutes of flushing after water arrives. The dispenser stops after three continuous minutes; release the paddle before continuing. Filter replacement has its own procedure on page 40. Pause to empty the container and stop for leaks.Page 26: initial priming · Page 40: after filter replacement
- Filter — pages 39–40Look beside the Deli Drawer at the lower left of the fresh-food compartment. Use the manual before removal or replacement; turn the ice maker off first. Do not force a filter that will not seat normally.Pages 39–40: water filter
Manual mapping and these page references checked September 14, 2026. For other models, use that model’s manufacturer documentation; no button sequence, filter location or flushing time is inferred.
Not sure, still waiting, or still no ice?
In the interactive diagnostic, “Not sure” leaves the check unanswered. You can copy a brief without leaving, consult the manual, then review the same question. At a corrective step, choose “Still waiting / save brief” until you have completed the applicable work and retested. Use “No — keep diagnosing” only after that retest has failed.
If the safe path ends without ice, the outcome is a request for diagnosis—not proof that the external checks were normal or that a valve, sensor or ice-maker module failed. The technician brief separates completed answers, unsuccessful corrections and unanswered checks. Add installation/filter dates, observed water flow and temperature readings when available.
What the answers can lead to
Turn the ice maker on
An intentionally disabled ice maker cannot fill or harvest.
Evidence strength: Strong
Prime the water system and allow time
Air in new plumbing and initial cabinet cooldown can delay ice production.
Evidence strength: Strong
Restore water flow to the ice maker
Low incoming flow can prevent the ice maker from filling normally.
Evidence strength: Strong
Restore normal freezer temperature
Ice production depends on a sufficiently cold freezer.
Evidence strength: Strong
Ice is still not being made — arrange diagnosis
The reviewed homeowner path has reached its stopping point. Normal observations and unsuccessful corrections can both lead here; these checks have not identified a failed component.
Evidence strength: Strong
When professional diagnosis is the safer next step
The reviewed homeowner path has reached its stopping point. Normal observations and unsuccessful corrections can both lead here; these checks have not identified a failed component.
Appliance Verdict stops before energized electrical testing, gas-system work, sealed-system work, and other checks that can create unnecessary risk. A technician can use the model, issue, and completed checks from the interactive diagnostic as a starting point.
Repair or replace?
A diagnosis and a repair decision are different questions. Once you have a real repair quote, compare the total repair cost with the all-in price of a comparable replacement. Warranty or protection-plan coverage, appliance age, reliability history, efficiency, and likely future repairs can all matter. Appliance Verdict’s interactive result includes a transparent cost comparison rather than a black-box replacement recommendation.
